Mojang Supports Freedom

In the past few weeks, the internet has been ablaze with protests and petitions on the SOPA bill that is in consideration in congress. For those unaware, SOPA, the Stop Online Piracy Act (H.R. 3261), was brought into legislation for the purpose of increasing the ability for copy right holders to punish pirated content.

On December 16th, the House Judiciary Committee considering whether to send SOPA to the House floor abruptly adjourned voting. They are going to restart the hearing in 2012.

In the meantime a new opposition appears: Mojang and its General Counsel, Oxeye Games. In an official statement made on The Word of Notch blog, Marcus Persson stated, “Overzealous and vaguely formulated attempts to fight online piracy is of the scariest developments in online policies in recent times. Mojang has always fought to preserve free speech and the freedom of information, and will continue to do so in the future.”

SOPA is championed by Hollywood, and it represents the final cry of a dinosaur of the past. If the SOPA bill is passed then websites like Youtube can be taken offline if its users post content that is in any way copy righted.

How exactly will Mojang support efforts against this bill? News to come, but The Minecraft Portal is glad that Mojang will not sue us if the bill is passed.
